I got a shiny new (old) toy!

What’s in the battered brown box?

A lovely, lovely 60’s Jones sewing machine!

Isn’t it pretty? I saw it in a charity shop and it was way above my flinch point (£35, more money than I had on me and the shop didn’t take cards, luckily I was with family who were willing to scour their pockets!) I haven’t had a chance to play with it properly yet, but really at the moment I’m happy just looking at it. Is that weird?

It came with the manual and loads of feet and attachments that I don’t have on my newer machine.

Including this:

I’ve googled til it hurts but I can’t find a foot that looks like this anywhere on the web so I’m turning to you guys – any ideas? Why does it have that little loop on the front? What is it for?!

Our fashion department thought it might be a freehand buttonhole foot but they weren’t sure. It’s a Singer foot if that helps?

It’s a mystery to me!

  1. I love the heavy duty nature of the old metal sewing machines. Looks like you got a real beauty!

  2. Don't know for sure what that foot is, but my guess would be a foot to guide a thread to stitch over for piping??

  3. Hi, I love vintage all metal machines! I also own a computerized Brother machine for which I also love, but it has to be babies, my 45 year old all metal Kenmore 1914 with all the attachments & pattern cams is a real beauty! It will see through anything with the right needed!! I tend to use my vintage Kenmore more than my Brother, only cause it is beautiful to see on, anyways I remember watching a YouTube video on vintage sewing machine feet and a blog post, and I remember seeing a foot like the one you have above, and I remember it being for if you a piece of yarn or decorative satin yarn ect. That feeds into that whole and you would choose a zigzag or a stitch that would catch the decorative yarn, so you could make designs with the yarn and it would aid in properly feeding the yard in place. They still make newer feet attachments similar to the same use, like for pearl attachment, some will have several grooves to feed say 3 or 4 decorative yarn types onto fabric. But I know I've seen that foot in action somewhere on the web, sorry I don't have better information. Found your blog through a refashion dress you had on allfreesewingcom, PS love those jars with the machine embroidered love letters now that's my kind of sewing !!
