Hi! Yes, I cut the treads to make it legible. Because these were going to be set into the tops of little pots they won't unravel. You can't tell from the front, but there is a LOT of thread on the back!

If they were for something else, like clothing or something that is going to be washed I doubt they would survive very long. They might though if it was a small amount of sewing that could be reinforced on the back with bondaweb, fabric glue or maybe layers of fabric overlaid at the back?

You're very lucky! I wish I had family letters from the war. These are from ebay and they are great, so much to read and they are so interesting. Maybe it's a good thing they aren't from my family - it would be hard to cut them up, even if they are only sewn versions!

It looks great. I love old letters, we have a large plastic bin of them written to DH'smother mostly during the war. Every winter we think we will get time to sit and read through them but there is always something more pressing.

I think it's a MARVELOUS idea! Are you going to embroider so it looks just like the handwriting? If you work on a close weave fabric with a tight backstitch, you should be able to get enough definition to closely mimic the actual handwriting! I can not wait to see how these work out!

I just stumbled across your site while trawling for upcycling ideas. You are a mine of information, plus anyone who rescues hens is good in my book. It is a shame we don't live closer as I am being forced to downsize my knitting magazine colllection, but New Zealand is a bit far away from you.

Keep those wonderful ideas flowing. And why do op shops sort by colour? I can see colour at a glance, size would be more useful.

if they have a little hen house, I'd leave them in for a couple of hours longer in the morning, as they will normally lay in the nest box once they don't have the freedom of the garden too early. Or you could listen intently to them, as when they lay an egg they tend to get very loud and very vocal, showing off at their very great achievement :) so where you find the hen giving it socks, you should find the eggs :) Hope this help, I've 7 hens and 2 ducks and a drake, and up until recently when we had a hen run built,I'd absolutely no idea where the ducks were laying so no doubt I've a gazilion little nests full of duck eggs all over the place in secret coves! Good luck with your girls, how lucky the rescue ones have a happy place to spend the rest of their days!
